Criteria for Accessing Genie in the Gutter as a Client

  • All clients must be in active addiction. I.e. a problem drinker and or drug user, and or taking prescribed medication e.g. subutex, methadone.
  • All clients must have expressed an interest in improving their lifestyle in relation to their drug and or alcohol use. Please note: this does not mean that all clients have to express an interest in becoming drug free and or abstinent, but it is a requirement that clients have a desire to improve their lifestyle in relation to their addiction. Our optimum outcome is for clients to achieve a drug free status but a reduction in their medication, criminal activity if applicable, visits to A&E, improved housing, education and training are all positive outcomes.
  • All clients must express an interest in at least one of the sessions delivered at Genie and or an interest in our routes to recovery groups.
  • A client care plan is designed between the client and worker during the initial assessment and induction process. Clients are reviewed formally every 10 weeks in regards to their progress with additional aims and goals being set and achievements recorded, including impact training, as part of their ongoing care. Clients are also reviewed informally on an ongoing basis with more frequent formal reviews being set up if necessary.
  • Clients who do reach a drug free status they will be reviewed and able to continue accessing Genie In The Gutter as a client for a maximum 8 week transitional period. If a client is involved in a production, e.g. a play, an art exhibition then there may be some flexibility in the 8 week transitional period but during the course of this they will still be actively signposted to more suitable drug free agencies.
  • The 8 week transitional period will involve thorough assessments and comprehensive signposting, particularly to The Spider Project, who are based in close proximity to Genie In The Gutter and run similar classes for drug free and or abstinent clients. Emphasis is also placed on mainstream training, education and employment during the exit strategy. Client’s aims and objectives will be discussed in one to one meetings and the client will engage with their worker to produce an appropriate and positive future action plan.
  • This 8 week transitional period may also include an opportunity to train with Genie In The Gutter as a mentor and or volunteer/ recovery advocate so the client can continue accessing Genie In The Gutter in a drug free capacity and act as a positive role model for our clients who are still actively using. Mentors and volunteers can train immediately but must be drug and or alcohol free for a minimum of 12 months before they can actively work with our clients.
  • The mentors/ volunteers and advocates are also welcome to be involved with our ‘Reach Out Programme’ – an outreach programme that visits various hostels and similar organisations passing the message of recovery on through the vehicle of creative arts.
